Su Rowe Ceramics

What do you love most about what you do?

I love just being able to play and explore with the materials that I am lucky enough to be able to use.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

Oh where to start, the glorious surroundings and the friendly people would be my two favourite things I think, everyone is just so welcoming and helpful.

Cream teas or pasties?

Originally from Cornwall it has to be a good old Cornish Pasty, proper job!

Becky Frost

What do you love most about what you do?

I love creating beautiful, pretty items from scratch, it gives me such sense of achievement and satisfaction.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

I love watching the beautiful countryside changes with the seasons and there is always something going on or somewhere to go.

Cream teas or pasties?

That's tough! Pasties from our local shop, they must be made with flakey pastry!

Annmade Crafts

What do you love most about what you do?

The satisfaction of making something from my own design. Stitching is a passion.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

Everything is here in the south west, Moors, Countryside, Beaches, it's easy to find inspiration from the surrounding area.

Cream teas or pasties?

Cream teas without a doubt!

The Candle Works

What do you love most about what you do?

The process - starting with lots of raw materials and ending up with a finished product. And working for myself!

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The sense of space and the slower pace of life...... everything will be done dreckly!

Cream teas or pasties?

I've always had more of a taste for savoury things so I would have to say pastie, so long as it is cheese and onion or veg as I don't eat red meat.

Cluless Glass

What do you love most about what you do?

That I make unique items for people to treasure. I love that glass has so many possibilities and I love creating new things in the workshop at the bottom of my garden. I love being around other creatives who all express their talents in their own, individual ways. Telling people about what I do (when they're really interested) and how all of this came about by accident as I never thought I had an arty bone in my body, and am totally self-taught, and yet I've made awards now for The Hub Business 2013, Choose Cornish 2014 and Cornwall Sustainability 2014.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The beaches, the moors, the chilled out way of life. Flying a kite with the kids and the dogs on a blowy Sunday, or having a coffee and watching the waves at Watergate.

Cream teas or pasties?

Pasties!

My Sister Mabel

What do you love most about what you do?

Being creative with fabrics and colours, but equally it’s being in charge of my own time, with two young children that is really important to me.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

Lovely places to visit - beaches and moors and very friendly people.

Cream teas or pasties?

Cream Teas

Hootchie Mama

What do you love most about what you do?

The flexibility of being able to work from home & be there for my kids when they are off school. I also love being able to design & make products that I would love to use and that my customers want.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The beaches without doubt. Being able to go out for days that cost very little and the beautiful landscape of Cornwall.

Cream teas or pasties?

Tough question! Cream teas by a smidge.

Sue Cheney Glass

What do you love most about what you do?

I love working with glass – the huge variety of colour, texture and design make the possibilities endless. I love just playing around with new ideas and seeing the end result.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The beautiful, spectacular coast and of course Dartmoor – I love the changes with every new season.

Cream teas or pasties?

Both of course! But if you’re really pushing me a cream tea with freshly made scones, delicious homemade strawberry jam and clotted cream (jam first for me!)

Designs by Antoinette

What do you love most about what you do?

Being creative is an inner passion that drives me to design and make jewellery. Ultimately, nothing beats the feeling of seeing a customers face light up when they select an item and put it on.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The best thing about living in Plymouth is the Hoe and the boutique chic of the Barbican combined with sea views and being moments away from either moorland, cliffs tops or beaches.

Cream teas or pasties?

Tough one! A chicken pasty after a cliff top walk, but, as a treat I love to have lazy afternoon champagne & cream tea beside an open fire in the historical surroundings of Borringdon Hall.

Alexandra Crichton Art & Design

What do you love most about what you do?

That blissful moment of inspiration - the creation of something truly original. I am always thrilled when someone else then loves it too!

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

There's so much to paint and draw between the Coast and the Moors. I'm particularly attracted to working boatyards, ghostly Tors and the architecture of old towns. There's a fascinating history to this region. It's home!

Cream teas or pasties?

Oh I love a good steak pixie pasty but wouldn't say no to a cream tea either. Cream first of course.

Jewells

What do you love most about what you do?

I love everything about running Jewells – from finding new treasures to make into jewellery to discovering gorgeous fabrics to make into notebooks and mirrors. I also love seeing Jewells stock in various shops around the country and getting out to meet customers by attending local craft fairs.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The sea has to be the best thing about living in the South West – I live around 50 footsteps from the seafront and could not imagine not seeing the sea every day. Growing up in Penzance was amazing – days on the beach and the outdoor swimming pool were all we had to worry about.

Cream teas or pasties?

Cream Teas! I have a real sweet tooth and could eat clotted cream straight from the pot – which I have been known to do on occasion!! But do enjoy occasional pasties too.

Luminosity Art

What do you love most about what you do?

I love how versatile working with ‘warm glass’ is. I enjoy experimenting and the excitement of opening the kiln after a firing has finished never goes away!

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

I love the fact that we are surrounded by such beautiful countryside and coastland and the whole vibe down here is so much more relaxed.

Cream teas or pasties?

Cream Teas!

Carol Hicks Creative

What do you love most about what you do?

To be able to create exactly what I want and never knowing when the inspiration is going to pounce! I go to a lot of craft fayres and love meeting new people and making things exactly to their specifications. I am a bit of a perfectionist - I love to get things just right for people.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

What's not to love? The beaches top it for me though - especially North Cornwall around Padstow where we tend to go to chill out, relax and walk the dog and eat too much.

Cream teas or pasties?

Both - but if I had to choose it would be a Steak and Stilton Pasty!!

Dom's Pottery

What do you love most about what you do?

To create something unique everyday. I can't think of anything better than that!

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

I have lived in over 6 different countries before settling in the South West. Hands down, it has the friendliest people I have ever met.

Cream teas or pasties?

I am a coffee drinker, but LOVE pasties.

Kernow Spa

What do you love most about what you do?

Making products that people love. There is nothing nicer than when a customer comes up to us and says how wonderful one of our products is.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

Seeing the sea every day and being able to go to the beach whenever we want! After living inland for a number of years, when we came back to Cornwall we made a pact to appreciate the coast more!

Cream teas or pasties?

A homemade pasty every time. My mum makes the biggest pasties in Cornwall (in my opinion!), and it’s always a challenge to eat one all in one go!

Random Stuff

What do you love most about what you do?

Becoming totally absorbed making something beautiful, usually using discarded paper, which to me is treasure!

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The people!

Cream teas or pasties?

Cream tea, but love a good pasty too, tricky question that one!

Nikinacks

What do you love most about what you do?

I have loved sewing since I was a child. My Great Aunt taught me to knit, sew and crochet and I have always been making something ever since! I enjoy meeting people at the fairs I attend and it continues to give me enormous satisfaction to think people buy and come back for more of my products.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

I am Cornish and I cannot think of anywhere else I would rather live. I love the fact that I can be on a beach within 20 minutes of leaving my house. I aspire to live right by the sea when I can.

Cream teas or pasties?

Can I say both? I make scones on a regular basis, mostly for my colleagues at work. I love home-made pasties but my sewing seems to take precedence over my cooking but luckily Barnecutt's make a reasonable substitute!

Sapooni

What do you love most about what you do?

Probably the smells! I’m always surrounded by gorgeous natural scents. But there are so many things I love - meeting my lovely customers, creating natural products that I know every ingredient in them so no chemical nasty surprises, being my own boss (which usually means having lunch at 3pm because I’ve worked through).

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

Being surrounded by nature in all its diversity, especially trees, wild flowers, open spaces & the sea. And the history of the land.

Cream teas or pasties?

Cream tea if I’m PMT otherwise most definitely a proper pasty. Hot & from the paper bag.

Everyday Wonders

What do you love most about what you do?

I love taking elements of the everyday (so often called boring, eg newspapers) and making something interesting with them, the ordinary inspires me. I try to look at the everyday world with curiosity and awe and then bring a little of that wonder to others - hence the name Everyday Wonders.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

There's so much to see and draw inspiration from, in so many different ways. You're never too far away from a beach, moor or woodland and there are great places to live with interesting stories.

Cream teas or pasties?

Erm ... do I have to choose? I love pasties - both traditional and artisan ones (you have to try a tomato, basil and cheese pasty) but cream teas are a wicked delight too. Perhaps one then the other is best?

The Whittling Workshop

What do you love most about what you do?

Turning an exciting idea into a reality - I get so many ideas and enjoy experimenting with different materials and techniques. I'm constantly motivated by seeing the results from what sometimes starts out as a simple 'middle of the night' idea. I also love the buzz I get from other people when they love the things I make. It's their positive feedback which gives me the most enjoyment.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The beaches and the coastline. It's where I was born and it's such a great place to live and work.

Cream teas or pasties?

Being a Cornishman - pasties every time.

Simply Quite Peachy

What do you love most about what you do?

The thing I love most about doing what I do is the freedom I have at being able to create my own designs, and seeing my ideas come to life in the form of an object you can pick up and touch.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

The best thing for me about living in the South West is being surrounded by such beautiful scenery and being inspired by my surroundings. I love nothing more than taking a stroll by the coast and absorbing all the beauty (that we most often take for granted).

Cream teas or pasties?

Oh it has to be cream-tea for me all the way! This is also one of THE highlights of living in the South West for sure.

Kyerwa

What do you love most about what you do?

I love creating unique and quirky items. However, there is nothing like making something personalised that is going to be a present for a special occasion. As a maker I love knowing what I create is what has been envisaged, or better still, exceeds expectations.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

I love living in Cornwall - for me its home, its heritage and landscape make it unique. I come from a family which helped form the mining heritage of the Tamar Valley so I'm very proud to still be living here and wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Cream teas or pasties?

Pasties every time, I am of an unusual breed that doesn't like cream!!

Koa Jewellery

What do you love most about what you do?

The satisfaction of seeing a design I am really happy with finally going out to customers. It's a long process and it has to be just right!

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

Those beautiful beaches!

Cream teas or pasties?

Pasties!

Ross Prints

What do you love most about what you do?

The very best thing about what I do is breathing life into the little characters I create using just a pencil and paper, it's a complete thrill seeing a new character take shape and come alive. I also love the screen printing process, building the layers up cleanly and accurately is challenging but great fun.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

Dartmoor, Exmoor and the coast. I love a good walk and the occasional dip in the sea, what better place to do it than in the South West?

Cream teas or pasties?

Pasties! Although I don't think I've ever refused a cream tea.

Sandra Richings

What do you love most about what you do?

It switches off the mind from day to day stresses and boosts the self esteem.

What's the best thing about living in the South West?

Easy and quick access to so many lovely areas, Dartmoor and South Hams particularly.

Cream teas or pasties?

Pasties!
